The Process of Pet Blood Donation

Donating blood might sound scary, but for pets, it’s a straightforward and safe process. Here’s what typically happens at A Pet Blood Band donor session:

Donor Screening: Before your pet can donate, they’ll need to meet certain criteria. These usually include being in good health, up to date on vaccinations, meeting age and weight requirements, and having a calm temperament. A vet will perform a thorough health check, including blood tests, to ensure your pet is a suitable donor.
The Donation Process: The actual blood donation is quick and painless. Your pet will be made comfortable, often with treats and plenty of attention. A small area of fur is shaved, and the blood is drawn from a vein, usually in the neck. The process typically takes about 30 minutes to give 1 pint of blood (yes dogs typically give a pint the same as humans).
Aftercare: After donating, your pet will be given fluids and a small snack (unfortunately there is no cup of tea on offer!). They might be a bit tired for the rest of the day, but most pets bounce back quickly. You’ll be given aftercare instructions to ensure your pet recovers fully.

What is the criteria for a donor?

Your dog must be

Fit and Healthy,
Be Between 1 and 8 years old,
Weight more than 25kg,
Have a good temperament,
Have never been outside the UK,
Be vaccinated or have an annual titre test,
Not be on any medication.
